This Pub is Closed Long Term
A handsome pub from the late Victorian period. In 2015 the pub was taken over by the same operator as the Pelton Arms, Greenwich and the Shortlands Tavern, Bromley. with up to eight ever changing real ales from smaller breweries available. It consists of a large single room with an L-shaped bar counter and a large garden to the rear. Cask Monday, open to all, charges a flat rate for all cask ales (currently at February 2020 £3 per pint). Quiz held on Tuesday evenings. A variety of newspaper titles supplied on Saturdays and Sundays. 8 handpumps and on Charlton Athletic FC home match days several uncooled casks may be on gravity dispense on the bar counter to enhance speed of service. A function room and another smaller room with a bar (no real ale) and several other seating areas were added upstairs in 2017. May close early any day if business is deemed to be too light.
Historic Interest
Locally listed in 2023 by Royal Borough of Greenwich. At one time a Charrington's house and when called The Swan Inn the building had a third storey, now demolished.
Active Campaign
The pub closed in 2020 and soon after a planning application for change of use was applied for. In November 2020 planning permission was granted for 3-bed house on part of the beer garden. In March 2023 planning permission was refused for conversion of 1st floor function room to residential. At Easter 2023 a campaign started to consider a community buy-out. In June 2024 planning permission was refused on appeal for conversion of upper to residential and ground floor to class E commercial use, e.g. a supermarket. In late June 2024 pub was advertised to let. White Swan Music and Arts (a CBS) aims to raise a ÂŁ360,000 deposit to buy the pub, and on Wednesday 3rd December 2025, they are holding a crowdfunding music video launch to kick-start its crowdfunding effort (see link. The campaigners ultimately aim to raise enough money to buy the pub outright and restore the pub. See the societies website for more details.
