Historic Interest

The Griffin's Head was registered as an Asset of Community Value on the 16th May 2016 by Gedling Borough Council after being nominated by the Nottingham Branch of CAMRA. The pub takes its name from part of the armorial bearings of the Montague family, part of local land-owning gentry in the late 18th century.

The Griffin's Head is a Grade II listed building (No. 1265300) of the mid-eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It is in Gedling Borough Council's Papplewick Conservation Area. "Coursed rubble and dressed stone, with slate and plain tile roofs. Ashlar dressings. Shouldered coped gables. Single ridge and 3 gable stacks. Double depth. 2 storeys, 4 bays wide. Irregular L-plan. Windows are glazing bar casements. West front has to left, gable with 2 storey canted hipped bay window. To its right, hipped porch with 2 columns and panelled door To right again, 2 casements. Above, to left, 3 casements in bay window. North side has to left lower 2 storey addition, C19, with 2 casements. To its right, ashlar doorway with segmental head, mid C20. To its right, casement with segmental head. Above, 3 casements. South side has off-centre glazed walkway, late C20, flanked by 3 casements with segmental heads. Above, 4 casements. East gables have door with segmental head, flanked to left by brick and stone stair and to right by 2 casements. Above to left, door. To right, 2 casements." (Historic England).

In the 1823 Alehouse Recognizances for the Broxtowe Hundred, the Griffin's Head was under victualler William Bell (County Archive C/QD/LV/4/3/95). In 1855 the Griffin's Head was fully licensed under R. Brown and in 1876 the publican was Robert Brown (Post Office Directories).

Asset of Community Value

Lobby, two separate rooms. Remainder much opened-out. Some 1930s features survive. An old pub. The three-room part at the front appears to have been subject to refurbishments by Home Brewery in the 1930s and postwar. Minimal features survive, and there has been too much tinkering and opening-out to justify inclusion.
