Formerly a sewing shop, converted into a micro-pub and opened on 3rd February 2018. Whilst narrow, the pub extends considerably, creating the illusion of separate drinking areas. A 'snug' was added in 2019 just off the entrance and at the rear a 'secret garden' was created, a tranquil oasis in the heart of Hucknall. Nottingham 2023 Cider Pub of the Year and runner up in the Nottingham 2023 Pub of the Year competition.
Historic Interest
There used to be a Byrons Rest on High Street, which shut in 1938. The name is an allusion to the local poet Lord Byron being buried in the nearby Church of St. Mary Magdalene. A marble slab given by the King of Greece is laid directly above Byron's grave. His daughter, Ada Lovelace, was later buried beside him.
George Gordon Byron, 6th Baron Byron ( born 22 January 1788 – died 19 April 1824), was a poet, peer, politician and a leading figure in the Romantic movement. He is rightly regarded as one of the greatest British poets and remains widely read and influential. Among his best-known works are the lengthy narrative poems Don Juan and Childe Harold's Pilgrimage; many of his shorter lyrics in Hebrew Melodies also became popular.
He travelled extensively across Europe, especially in Italy, where he lived for seven years in the cities of Venice, Ravenna and Pisa. During his stay in Italy he frequently visited his friend and fellow poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. Later in life Byron joined the Greek War of Independence fighting the Ottoman Empire, for which Greeks revere him as a national hero. He died in 1824 at the age of 36 from a fever contracted in Missolonghi.
His only legitimate child, Ada Lovelace, is regarded as the first computer programmer based on her notes for Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS).
His father, Captain John "Mad Jack" Byron was an officer in the Coldstream Guards and his grand-father was Vice-Admiral John "Foulweather Jack" Byron RN.
