A 16th century country inn set opposite Saint Mary's church in a pretty village just south of Congleton. Large, multi-roomed, and beamed, the Egerton boasts 6 bedrooms and a menu of home-cooked food in a separate restaurant including good vegetarian options, and other specialist diets can also be catered for. The comfortable interior is is a good place to sit and enjoy the pleasures of conversation. Children will enjoy the play area, in the garden, which is fenced and safe. A convenient spot for a number of local attractions, including Jodrell Bank science centre and Little Moreton Hall, said to be the best example of a timber-framed house in the country. The building dates from 1560 and was originally a farm serving the monastery next to St Mary's Church. It began brewing on site and had one of the first licences in the area. The restaurant is the former barn. Reputed to be haunted, the cottage next door is the site of a murder in 1922 when a man killed his sister, a crime for which he was hanged in 1929.
