You want to visit - You have this in

A 16th-century inn in the heart of the village. Underwent a massive refurbishment in 2017, but the old rooms remain, albeit modernised. As you enter, a tiny locals' bar is on the right and a room mainly for dining on the left. The main bar is accessed via a passage, past the main bar is another room with seating and a glass roof, and also a window looking out onto Main Street. The decor throughout has the limited colour palette fashionable nowadays but it avoids austerity. Interest is provided by photos of old Heysham. Note the lampshades fashioned from demijohns. At the rear of the Royal is a covered smoking area and paved beer garden (until 11 pm).

UPDATE May 2017:

Re-opened 2 May 2017 after being closed for six months for renovation. The photographs show the pub before the work was undertaken.

Mid 18th-century pub with later additions that retains a splendid snug. Front door leads into a passage with 1930s fielded panelling. On the right is a leaded glass screen with colourful stained and leaded symbols such as a knight in shining armour that forms a tiny snug. The door has a figure '3' on it and note the gap in the screen for service in the passage. This fine room retains a good 1930s bar counter, old stone fireplace, good 1930s panelling to 2/3rds height, a couple of settles but a modern bar back.

To the left is a dining room that was extended in recent years. The first part has a panelled dado that could date from the 1930s but the rest is modern and the existence of a range fireplace may indicate this part was in domestic use in the past. The passage goes to the right around the back of the snug where there is a tiny area with more 1930s dado panelling. On the right is the lounge where the bar counter with a curved section at the top could be from the 1930s but the bar back looks modern. The Tudor-arched stone fireplace appears to be from the 1930s and there are are more settles.
