This historic inn was a classic roadside pub originally providing accommodation for those embarked on long stagecoach journeys; these trips must have been quite eventful in the late 18th century when a band of robbers from Culworth in Northamptonshire were active in the area of Gaydon. Their leader John Smith was hanged in Northampton in 1787; his son, also named John, took up highway robbery and two years later he was arrested for a hold-up at the Gaydon Inn and was hanged later at Warwick. Another famous Warwickshire highwayman Tom Hatton may also have frequented this Inn. Today the pub consists of a large friendly bar and a smaller lounge combined with the restaurant.
