Reputed to be the oldest hotel in England and built as the 'New Hall' in 1573 by Bess of Hardwick, on the site of an earlier inn. It provided accommodation for Mary Queen of Scots who was under house arrest. The hotel was much rebuilt in 1670, but parts of the 1573 building survive.

The Old Hall Hotel is located beside the Crescent and run by the same hotel company. It is near the Buxton Opera House and consists of a large traditional hotel with a public wine bar furnished in contemporary style, located in the centre of the building after entering via the main door.
