Spacious pub in the town centre in a former bank building, well-served by local transport. Now under the tenancy of Whelan Inns, there is a good range of bottled beer alongside the hand-pumped Fuller's ales. Thai food is served by Jane's Thai Kitchen (separate payment by card only). Sport is shown on the TV screens, with no sound, and an upstairs function rooms is available. The instagram account is 'spreadeaglecroy'. Occasional events are hosted there, such as a DJ and bands. Quiz night is Sunday (7pm).
Historic Interest
Built in 1893 as the Croydon branch of the Union Bank of London Grade II listing:- Two structures of different date now in one occupancy (no longer); No 45A comprises a separate office on the upper floors of Nos 43 and 45. Nos 39 and 41: Dated 1893. Classical style. Three storeys and basement. Three bays. Red brick facings with order of Giant Corinthian pilasters, entablature and parapet. Ground floor faced in ashlar with separate order. Second and first floor windows sashes with moulded ashlar architraves, panelling between floors and first floor windows with cornices. Large windows on ground floor with demi-columns between them. Centre of 7-bay return front to Katherine Street has pedimented panel with letters 'BUL 1893' in parapet. First floor segmental pediment, columned entrance to bank below. Nos 43, 45 and 45A: Mid C19. Three storeys, 2 bays. Brick. Stucco cornice and blocking course with frieze band of guilloche moulding below; stucco quoins. Sash windows with moulded stucco shouldered architraves and cornices, first floor architraves with wheat-ear drop to either side. Modern plate-glass bank front to ground floor.
