Traditional pub.

Very much a locals pub, hidden away from the main roads and situated at the corner of Maple Road and Padua Road. It has had various names in the past, including the William IV and the Crown. The pub is well-maintained and clean, with the quirky décor creating an old fashioned atmosphere of times gone by.

The pub is a privately-owned free house with only a single cask ale available.

Historic Interest

Dating from 1878, this public house originally opened as the William IV with the expansion of Penge as a suburb. Renamed as the Crown, this expanded in 1978 absorbing the property next door before being renamed again in 1982 as the Maple Tree. Maple Road was famous for its street market, which ran from 1921 to 2010 (originally set up to help ex-servicemen from WWI), but has now evolved into an artists colony. The Maple Tree pub is the sole survivor along this street with all the other pubs now gone (these being the Lord Palmerston, Hop Exchange, Dew Drop Inn and Golden Lion). These would have all been popular with the market traders.
