Queen's Head, Green Street Green

First recorded in 1769, this was a purpose built inn with facilities for changing horses as well as stables and situated on the London to Hastings & Rye coach road (on the corner with World's End Lane, which was originally a track leading to Chelsfield). Back in the 18th C, the slopes to the east of the inn were used for growing hops. The inn had its name by 1807 and was rebuilt in 1899 when owned by Nalder & Collyer's Brewery and serving their range of ales. The inn was also a popular stop for visitors from the 1880s, when excursions to the surrounding countryside became fashionable. This trend increased into the early 20th C with the growing popularity of cycling (the inn also served as tea rooms). In the late 1930s, the footpath across the fields to Chelsfield station was absorbed into the growing housing development of what was to be called "New Chelsfield". In the past, the inn sign has portrayed both Queen Mary I ("Bloody Mary") and Queen Victoria at different times.
