Hop & Rye, Bromley

The pub closed permanently on May 12 2019, and was eventually demolished in November 2020. The developers have applied for permission to build a four storey plus basement building to comprise ground floor and basement retail space (Use Class E) and 9 residential flats (Use Class C3) on upper levels to include private amenity space, car parking, loading bay, new bin store, cycle store, landscaping and other associated works.

The description below applied to the pub immediately prior to its closure:

Although the present pub is a fairly recent build, containing a long L-shaped bar and with a large bay-window facing London Road, its name and approximate location is steeped in nineteenth century history. Close to where the pub stands was a nursery garden and a fine half-timbered house, in front of which was a purple beech tree. Legend has it that Sir Joseph Paxton, who was responsible for the original Crystal Palace Grounds was so impressed with the specimen that he had it dug up and transported to its new grounds. Pub premises in that proximity, variously called Beech Tree Hotel or the Beech Tree Inn, came and went over the last 200 years in that part of the district known as Farwig, but successive builds on the spot occupied by the present pub cannot be verified. In June 2013 the pub was renamed the "Hop & Rye", and renovation included the provision of new carpeting and furniture.
