This Pub is Closed Long Term

Popular back-street 19th-century local with long-serving landlord (28 years). Unfortunately, the old Worthington Burton Ales etched windows, indicating the (former) Tap Room, Public Bar, Smoke Room and Snug, have been replaced by plain double-glazed uPVC units!

Inside, the small public bar and larger lounge are linked in an L-shape around the bar counters, each with local historical memorabilia. There is also a pool/darts room across an open 'corridor' from the bar.

Outdoor drinking at front in summer, on decking at rear, and on lawn beyond car park.

Historic Interest

Thought to have been built in the mid-1800s (for the Osbourne family?), but first mentioned in an 1870 trade directory. Little information on subsequent history, although part of the building was reputedly once a shop, and the former etched windows offered evidence of ownership by Worthington’s Brewery at some stage; Worthington’s merged with Bass in 1927. The pub remained with Bass until sold to Punch Taverns in 1998. The latter’s pubs were bought by Patron Capital in 2017, but ~60% (including this pub) were promptly sold to Heineken (Star Pubs & Bars), a number of which (again including this pub) were sold to NewRiver Retail / Hawthorne Leisure in late 2018.
