Historic Interest

Previously Live Music venue which was transferred to upstairs at the Flying Flute after lease was not renewed with owner, this also soon closed at the beginning of June. Still had a Vaux light over the entrance and a Vaux sign on the rear of the building in 2014 (see photo). In 1981 it was a Whitbread keg pub, but started selling Duttons Bitter, Hartleys Bitter and after refurbishment in late 1981 Hartleys XB. It was visited on a Branch pub crawl on December 11th 1981. In 1983 Duttons Bitter had gone to be replaced with Marstons Pedigree which in turn was swapped for Castle Eden Ale. By June 1985 only Chesters Bitter was available but by December 1985 the hand pump had been removed. Early in 1990 it was rumoured that Holts were trying to buy the pub from Whitbread, but soon after Vaux from Sunderland had been successful and they installed Holts Bitter as a guest beer. In 2003 the pub had a house beer available, though the source was unknown, the pub was a music venue to the left, but still had a tap room/vault to the right where the handpump was on the bar.
