This Pub is Permanently Closed
The pub was struck by a Land Rover Discovery in the bar area, and as a result was closed. There was structural damage to the pub in addition to the large hole made in the side of the pub. See photos for before and after. Reopening has stalled after remedial works were expected to start in early 2015 but never got going. Even though covered by insurance, the owners refused to allow rebuilding/reopening of the pub as they consider it to be part of a wider redevelopment area. The pub stood boarded up and a blight on the area for another 6 years, though in a much better state than some of the other buildings further up Manor St. Demolition of the area including the pub finally took place during 2021. Always famous for its live bands inside and on the stage at the rear, the stage in the late 90's was built on double size non standard pallets imported from Germany! The Bolton branch chairman for several years, the late Neill Stewart, called in the D&P on a regular basis after work and sat at the end of the bar where the Land Rover came through the wall. On the day of the accident he had luckily gone elsewhere. A very sad ending to such an unspoilt pub.

Historic Interest
In May 1981 this was a Thwaites pub selling Ordinary Mild and Bitter, it had previously been a keg Bass pub which they sold at auction and it was bought by Thwaites. The pub reopened around xmas 1978 and a first of many branch meetings was held here on May 21st 1979. In June 1979 it was reported that eleven out of twelve 22 gallon kegs of Mild had been returned to the Brewery who thought that keg would sell well as it had previously sold keg beer. The pub was visited on the Xmas Town Centre Pub Crawl on December 21st 1979. This was an annual occurence as well as other town centre pub crawls over the years it was open. It was a regular entry in the Good Beer Guide including 1980/1981/1986 to 1990/1992/1993/2000/2001/2003/2004/2006/2009 and 2013-2015. A photo of the pub before the vault door was bricked up was in What's Doing in April 1980, with a change of landlord in June 1980 Best Mild replaced the Ordinary Mild. It was included in the selective Greater Manchester Beer Guides in 1980 and 1985. A celebration of the change to 11pm closing was held here on April 4th 1985. In winter 1985/6 it was selling Thwaites Daniel's Hammer Strong Ale. The pub was included in the Great North Western Beer Festival suggested pub crawl in April 1987. By July 1987 Bob and Kath had left for the Masons in Radcliffe. For several years the Branch had a Pub Quiz team based at the pub and it was reasonably successful! Prices surveys of the town Centre started here for several years too. In August 1992 the pub started selling Thwaites new beer Craftsman. In Autumn 1997 a group of local Camra Members took on running the pub at the time Thwaites Bitter was £1.40. Holly Caulfield took over from Angus Crompton around June 1998 and to celebrate her first anniversary the Thwaites Horse Drawn Dray visited the pub, by now the pub was selling the regular Thwaites seasonal beers which had been introduced. In April 2001 Holly Caulfield had left and Angus Crompton was landlord again. In August 2006 the pub was included in the Regeneration area, this was to prove rather ominous for the pub. Thwaites were going to sell the pub to Licensee Neil Piper but on the day of completion they had decided to sell to Bluemantle Property developers instead. He subsequently leased/rented it from Bluemantle. According to the Land Registry the pub was sold for £556,000 in 2019. In 2024 the council are selling the whole of the Church Wharf site for a pitiful £4.
