Historic Interest
In December 1976 as a result of a strike at Tetley's Warrington Brewery Thwaites Mild and Bitter were available. In January 1977 it was North Manchester Branch Pub of the month. It was listed in John Stotts 1977 Guide to Good Beer in Bolton as selling Tetley Bitter and Mild (H), with TV, darts, dominoes. Behind the Labour Club. It was listed in the 1980 and 1985 selective Greater Manchester Beer Guides. In May 1981 it was a Tetley pub selling Tetley Mild and Bitter (H), A social was held here on March 27th 1985. In August 1986 Mild was 68p and Bitter 71p. On October 19th 1988 a pub crawl started here, around a year later on October 3rd 1989 a Branch Meeting was held here. On October 21st 1993 it was visited on another pub crawl. Around the same time the pub was threatened with demolition as the surrounding area was being considered for a new supermarket but the plans fell through. In May 1994 Eddie and Mary Trickett retired from the pub after 32 years. Tetleys soon refurbished the pub and it became more open plan, Vaux Samson (£1.00) joined the Tetley Mild and Bitter which was £1.23. The Vaux Samson was soon replaced with Holts Bitter at £1.05 which continued to be available for at least the next ten years. There were rumours that the pub was about to close in 1996 because the rents were too high, but nothing came of this. It featured in the Good Beer Guide in 1986, 1988 to 1993, 1996 and 2001/2.
