This Pub is Closed Long Term

CLOSED on 16th August 2016, reported as being as a result of a lease expiry.

Planning app 24/06256/FULL "Use of premises as a hotel (Class C1) comprising 17 hotel rooms and front-of-house space. Creation of lightwells to the front of the property and installation of new railings, and alterations to the ground floor front elevation. Demolition and reconfiguration of the rear lower ground and ground floor levels. Installation of new windows and doors throughout the property and installation of an air source heat pump with associated enclosure at rear first floor flat roof level" PERMITTED by Westminster Council 5 Aug. 2026.

The Molyneux Street Conservation Audit of 2002 identified the Windsor Castle as an unlisted building of local merit. It was a superb pub dedicated to the monarchy, with photographs and framed newspapers on the walls. It had a well-furnished lounge area with bric-a-brac and a model of the paddle steamer “Windsor Castle” in a glass case and a real (gas effect log) fire, which made for a cosy atmosphere in winter. The Windsor Castle was home to the world-famed Handlebar Moustache Club, founded in 1947 by Jimmy Edwards in his dressing room at the Whitehall Theatre, that met on the first Friday of each month for over 30 years at their permanently reserved table.

Historic Interest

Built in 1832 and first licensed in 1850 as the Gloucester Brewery & Beer House it was renamed after brewing ceased a few years later. Restored by former publican Michael Tierney, who retired in 2012, it was re-opened by local resident Wendy Richard in 1990.
