The William Gemmell Club was originally established as The Humber St Andrews Social Club, serving as a social and recreational center for employees of the local shipbuilding firm Cook, Welton and Gemmell. Built to support workers from the Cook, Welton and Gemmell shipyard (historically based on South Bridge Road on the Humber Bank), the venue became a cornerstone of Hull's tight-knit fishing and dock-working community.
• Origins & Maritime Roots: Built to support workers from the Cook, Welton and Gemmell shipyard (historically based on South Bridge Road on the Humber Bank), the venue became a cornerstone of Hull's tight-knit fishing and dock-working community.
• Golden Era (1960s–1990s): Throughout the mid-to-late 20th century, the club functioned as a busy, family-oriented working men's-style venue. It hosted dancing on Thursdays, Country and Western nights on Tuesdays, live artists on weekends, and served as a popular pre-match gathering spot for football fans near the nearby stadium areas.
• Debt & First Closure: Facing soaring financial debts, the original Humber St Andrews Club was forced to close down and was sold off
