This Pub is Permanently Closed
The White Post was located to the south of the town centre, opposite the Girls' Grammar School. It began trading in 1846, and in the early 20th century, like the majority of the town's pubs, it was part of the tied estate of local brewers Russell's, before passing to Truman's on takeover in 1930.
It continued as a Truman's house until shortly before its closure in 2002. It then stood empty for some years before the site was redeveloped. This process was assisted to some extent by means of the 'accidental' demolition of part of the building with a bulldozer. Shortly after that, what remained of the building mysteriously went on fire. Close observers of the local licensed trade was not altogether surprised by these events...
