Historic Interest
The brewery address in Farm Road was for its offices. The brewery itself existed before Farm Road was built and previous addresses used were variously Queens Place, Queens Buildings, and Quigley Street. The brewery buildings were behind the Farm Road offices and the location of the brewery is indicated on the 1882 OS map in what is now the modern Quigley Street. Benjamin Elvis appears to have been brewing from at least 1864 and the brewery was operated as Elvis & Ross until 1887 when it was taken over with 50 pubs by Gatehouse & Son. Subsequently taken over along with 67 pubs by Threlfall’s Brewery in 1927 and brewing had ceased by the following year – although still shown as Queen’s Brewery on the 1936 OS map. Threlfall’s and their pubs were taken over by Whitbread in 1967. The brewery and the buildings in the surrounding area were demolished and were redeveloped as housing.
