This Pub is Closed Long Term
The Walnut Tree was situated just outside the town centre, near the foot of West Hill. It is first recorded as trading in 1867 and the oldest of the three photographs, taken around 1915, suggests that at the time it may had an association with Croydon brewers A.C.S. & H. Crowley Ltd. It probably later traded as a Hoare's pub (Hoare's took over Crowley's in 1919) before Hoare's in turn were swallowed by Charrington's in 1933. The pub remained a Charrington house until shortly before closure.
Sadly time was called permanently in November 2006 and the pub stood empty for some considerable time after closure. It is now (10/20) in process of being converted into residential accommodation.
