This Pub is Closed Long Term
The Tollgate Motel stands at the junction of the A2 and A227, about 2 miles south of the town centre. It first opened as a wayside inn in 1827, but was rebuilt in 1923 as part of a road-widening scheme. The original pub is apparently buried underneath the 1923 building!
As can be seen from the archive photographs, the pub was for many years part of the local Russell's brewery's tied estate. It may have passed to Truman's on takeover in 1930, but this has yet to be established.
The Tollgate ceased trading in 2007, and its future remains uncertain as at October 2020. Various schemes have been mooted since its closure, but none has come to fruition. Rescuer awaited...
