Melton Lane, West Leake, LE12 5RQ (View on Google Map)

You’ll find us nestled just outside the pretty village of West Leake, sitting quietly across the Kingston Brook in the parish of Sutton Bonington. With over 200 years of history behind us, our countryside setting and strong community ties have earned us many names over the years – but to keep things simple, we’re known as The Star at West Leake.

Locals still affectionately call us “The Pit House,” and we’ve embraced that history by naming our restaurant in its honour. Why the name? There are a few tales… some say the building once housed a cockfighting pit; others believe it was a gathering place for local miners working in the area’s gypsum pits. Either way, it’s a name that’s stuck – and a nod to the character and stories that make our pub so special.

Historic Interest

On the 15th February 2016, Rushcliffe Borough Council rejected the Nottingham Branch of CAMRA's nomination of the Star as an Asset of Community Value. This was on the grounds that the local branch of CAMRA did not meet Rushcliffe Borough Council's requirements for an eligible local connection.Recorded as a public house in 1855 under publican J. Marshall (Post Office Directory). On the 26th March 1992, Bass sold the Star to the Centric Pub Company Limited. In 1994, Wiltshire brewer Gibbs Mew then bought Centric in a deal worth just over ÂŁ31m. Centric, born out of the Government-enforced sale of 11,000 outlets owned by the big brewers, was the first of the new-style pub independents to be taken over. The deal valued each of Centric's 197 pubs at ÂŁ157,000 each. Most of Centric's pubs had been bought from Bass in 1992 and were located in the Midlands and North-west. Gibbs Mew had 121 pubs, mainly in the South. Gibbs Mew greatly expanded their tied estate in their last years by buying pubs from the former Big Six (Centric Pub Company). The 1979 Good Beer Guide shows them as only having 55 pubs but by 1996 the figure had risen to over 300. Salisbury based Gibbs Mew closed in 1997, when local rival Ushers took over production of their beers. The Gibbs Mew signage is as a result of planning application 97/00073/ADV for which consent was given on the 28th February 1997. 310 tied houses were sold to Enterprise Inns. 19th July 2011, EI (Enterprise) sold the Star to Cliffe Investments. As at November 2017, the freehold for the Star Inn (NT351517) was held by Cliffe Investments Limited [Reg. No. 4608303].
