At the heart of the community, the Stamford Arms is a very popular pub and restaurant offering up to six cask ales, real ciders, craft beers and a wide gin selection. Awarded Leicester CAMRA Country Pub of the Year in 2020. The food is traditional with daily specials and there is also a pizza oven. Ideally located for Bradgate Park, the National Forest and Charnwood Forest, close to Junction 22 of the M1, A50 and A46.

Note that Groby is pronounced Groo-by!

Historic Interest

Previously known as the Earl of Stamford Arms, the pub was shown here on Ordnance Survey maps in the 19th century. A grade 2 listed building (ref 1361384), the building dates from the 18th century, but substantial alterations were made in the 20th century, including additional dormer windows on the second floor.

Since the late Middle Ages, Groby was an estate village belonging to the Grey family, the Earls of Stamford and Warrington. The family's coat of arms is displayed on the pub signs. Most of the village was sold off in the 1920s, and Everards acquired the pub in about 1921. Thomas William Everard DL JP (1851-1925), the son of brewery founder William Everard, was living at Bradgate House, Groby (not the same-named house in Bradgate Park) in the early 1900s. In 1925, Bradgate House was sold, then demolished.

The nearby Groby Pool is reputedly the largest natural expanse of open water in Leicestershire, covering 15 hectares. Groby Pool and the surrounding area are of great ecological importance and contain a wide range of plants and animals. The area was notified as a Site of Special Scientific Interest in 1956.
