This Pub is Permanently Closed
The Ship began life in 1834 as an hotel. The three images, reproduced by kind permission of www.dover-uk.com, show that the building was extensively remodelled on more than one occasion, with the 1960s 'Brewers' Tudor' looking particularly daft alongside the adjacent 19th century housing.
The pub had been part of the tied estate of Gravesend brewers Woods in the early 20th century, before passing to Russell's on takeover in 1911. Russell's in turn were gobbled up by London brewers Truman's in 1930 and the pub continued as a Truman house until closure in 1964. Shortly afterwards it was torn down to make way for the St George's shopping precinct.
