This traditional pub close to the Cumbria / Northumberland border offers a high quality local ale , food and accommodation to locals, tourists and walkers on Hadrian's Wall (50 meters from the HW Trail). The pub closed in October 2022. The Gilsland Community Benefit Society Limited (GCBSL) agreed a purchase price of £295,000 with the owners of the pub. A community share scheme was launched in December 2023 with £1 a share, with a minimum pledge of 25 shares. They raised more than £150,000 from 466 shareholders. They made a bid for a Community Ownership Fund grant and received £215,000, and they completed the purchase of the pub. A tenant, George Campbell, was appointed to run it, with the pub reopening in October 2024.
