A report in the Ipswich Journal** on Jul-14 in 1883 when Thomas Gower was the landlord states that : "Two men were seen leaving the back of the pub, one carrying a stone bottle. They were arrested & charged with theft, but the court heard that one of the men actually lodged at the pub & had every right to be on the premises carrying his own stone bottle".
