This Pub is Permanently Closed
We are looking for further information on the Rock & Fountain, which served the Well Hill community for many years until its closure in 2007. Regrettably this was within two years of the loss of Well Hill's only other pub, the Kent Hounds.
No information on its opening date has yet been traced. The older image (thanks to www.dover-uk.com for sharing) suggests that it may have been part of the tied estate of Dartford brewers C N Kidd & Son in the 1930s. Most Kidds pubs eventually ended up in the hands of giant combine Courage via a succession of takeovers and the presence of a Courage cockerel sign on the more recent photograph gives credence to this. Beyond that, little is known apart from the existence of evidence that it was restricted to a 6-day licence in 1911.
After closure the pub, a Grade II listed building, was flogged off and converted to a private house.
Any further information would be most welcome - please use the feedback form.
