The Nurseryman is a 'Pub & Grill' branded family food-orientated pub on a busy junction of the A52. Totally refurbished in 2018 and re-opened on 27 September 2018. Comfortably furnished, the main part of the pub at the front is set out for diners in distinct areas separated by pillars. There is a less formal drinkers zone to the rear where the Sports TVs are situated. Large outdoor seating area.

Historic Interest

The Nurseryman opened in November 1956 and takes its name from its location opposite the site of William Lowe and Son’s nurseries. Built for Hardy's Kimberley Brewery Limited, the licences of the Jolly Colliers Awsworth and Old Spot, Newthorpe were surrendered in return. Plans by W. B. Starr, Hall and Clifford dated January 1954, show a long lobby into a lounge hall with a smoke room and lounge to either side. The long ‘U’-shaped service area serves a rear public bar divided by the off sales, and with a case store at the side. The long hallway survives and the service counters are basically in the same position, but the pub has been extended all round and adapted as a restaurant. It was refurbished after a major fire, and the exterior is now partly rendered.(Elain Harwood / Historic England)
