Evening bar attached to a restaurant.
This is an evening cocktail bar in the reopened Simpsons, previously famous for being an Establishment eating establishment and for its carving trolleys and associated tipping etiquette. The drinks menu includes "cocktails inspired by the life & times of Dame Nellie Melba"; plus a range of other drinks including bottled beers and ciders; there is a small selection of bar snacks. Prices reflect the surroundings and ambience. Walk-ins only.
Upstairs are the Grand Divan and Romano's dining rooms, and another bar, Simpson's, for pre-meal drinks.
Historic Interest
Grade II listed, Historic England refrence 1236740. Simpson's has a rich history, outlined on its website. Women were not admitted to the main dining room until 1984, and tradition holds that the clock above its entrance stopped at the moment the first female entered. Simpson's appears in works by P. G. Wodehouse, E. M. Forster and Arthur Conan Doyle, as well as in the films The Guns of Navarone and Hitchcock’s Sabotage; and the TV series Downton Abbey.
