Rather gastropubby, and seems very busy most of the time, even mid-afternoon. A fairly small u-shaped bar downstairs so a lot of standers both inside and outside, and a lounge upstairs. Four cask ales often including some unusual ones.

The food offering is reasonably priced for the area and includes bar snacks, a main menu which includes pub favourites, and Sunday roasts.

Since its last refurb and reopening, the pub makes efforts to reduce its carbon footprint by working closely with charities such as FareShare (which helps reduce food waste) and the Zero Carbon Forum.

Historic Interest

Grade II listed, Historic England entry 1236229. In early 1941 Wendell Wilkie, a leading American politician who had opposed Roosevelt for the Presidency, ignored convention and popped in here one lunchtime from his Park Lane hotel. He played (and lost) a game of darts with a builder’s labourer and signed autographs. The licensee produced a half-bottle of 1929 champagne he had been saving for Armistice Day, and shared it with Wilkie to celebrate the latter’s first visit to an English pub.
