Lillie Langtry's, Nottingham

Real ale discount scheme

Long known as the Peach Tree, The pub became Langtry's in 1981 celebrating famed Victorian starlet Lillie Langtry. Photographs and playbills from her career adorn the walls and delight pre-theatre patrons for the Theatre Royal and Royal Concert Hall in the evenings. Six changing cask beers from a rotating selection of local and national breweries. The selection of ciders is among the best in Nottingham with up to seven at any time in summer and a three thirds cider tapas offering choice. Quality food is available all week using local ingredients. Renamed Lillie Langtry's after major refurbishment in August 2018, which saw the addition of two TV screens.

Historic Interest

Between 1761 and 1981, the pub was known as the Peach Tree. Now named after the Victorian actress Lillie Langtry (1853 - 1929), who appeared at the nearby Theatre Royal in 1885 (Whitworth 2010). Nicknamed the "Jersey Lily", the name was popularised by Sir John Everett Millais' portrait of her entitled "A Jersey Lily". Langtry was reputedly the mistress of Edward VII when he was Prince of Wales.

In 1825 the publican of the Peach Tree was Robert Mayfield (Glover).

Langtry's is a Grade II listed building (No. 1255172) and is in Nottingham City Council's Old Market Square Conservation Area. "Public house. Early and mid C19. Stucco with hipped artificial slate roof and rendered gable and ridge stacks. Plinth, ramped cornice to ground floor, moulded eaves. Ground floor has mainly cross framed plain sashes, upper floors mainly margin pane sashes, all with moulded surrounds. Front, to South Sherwood Street, has a doorway flanked by pilasters with recessed glazed door, and above it, a dummy parapet with ball finials. To left a single window, to right, 2 windows. Above, 3 windows on each floor, unequally spaced. Left return has a door flanked by two 3-light windows to left and a similar window to right, then a single light window. Above, 3 windows, and above again, 2 smaller glazing bar sashes and a blank. INTERIOR refitted late C20." (Historic England).

As at November 2017, the freehold for Langtrys (NT359313) was held by Unique Pub Properties Limited [Reg. No. 3726292], a subsidiary of Ei Group plc.
