This pub is the brewery tap for the adjacent Shipstones (formerly Alcazar) Brewery. On arrival you notice the large Fox & Crown mural depicting Sherwood Forest in the 13th Century (including the City's most famous character, Robin Hood). Inside you will find a central bar. There is a beer garden to the rear. TVs, darts and a pool table provide the entertainment. This pub is popular with both locals and students, and can get very busy during the kitchen's opening hours as the Thai food is held in high regard.
Historic Interest
Apparently dating back to at least 1707 as both an inn and a debtor's prison, it was also known locally as the Bowling Green because of the rink once at the rear of the pub (Whitworth 2010).
In 1883, the Fox and Crown was fully licensed under publican John Hartley (Wright's Directory).
