Originally built in the fifteenth century as the stables for horses on their way to Tatton Park, later the building must have been a haunt for highwaymen who used tunnels under the road as part of their escape route, with the bricked up entrances still visible in the cellar. The pub is now mainly a large single room on three levels with the rural décor, low lighting, including table candles and at least one real fire providing an intimate atmosphere. A separate small games room is used for pool and darts and there is a garden. The interior is child and dog friendly (within the confines of serving food).
Since becoming a freehouse, owned by Jeremy and Anne Hague the pub has re-established itself as part of the local community with excellent food and a good range of beer always featuring an offering from the local Mobberley Brewhouse. There is a loyalty card for draught beers. The fish in beer batter is renowned as the best in the locality, with the chips made from potatoes grown in the field over the road. Keep an eye out for the twice a year “Pie & pint” weeks and the Curry Week. There are also regular beer and food events, including food matching with local brewers’ beers. Steaks are discounted 30% on Tuesdays. Every Wednesday is “moules night”.
Live music every 3 months often features jazz and there are quiz nights on the last Thursday of the month. Real cider is available during the Summer months. The pool room is available for use as a small function room.
