Crown Inn, Newcastle-on-Clun (Crown)

The Crown is a 17th century country inn situated in the pretty Clun Valley in the Shropshire Hills AONB. To the left, as one enters, is a contemporary dining room and a small area to relax in comfy sofas. The more traditionally styled quarry tiled bar is to the right. Beyond this is a pleasant large room with a TV and Pool table. This is a very quiet and peaceful part of Shropshire, so in many ways the Crown appeals to and is a welcome respite for enthusiasts of outdoor leisure activities. A particular attraction is its position on the Offa's Dyke long distance path. In fact, it's the starting point for walk number 8 in the Walking with Offa series. The pub was nearly lost to the village in 2013. The previous owners, who had bought it in 2007, progressively ran down the pub side of the business until it was shut completely in January.

The parish council are hoping to apply for a Community Ownership grant in December 2023 with a view to getting it reopened. As of 28th November, they have completed costings to get the building up to scratch.

2013 and traded solely as a guest house for a year. The property was then put on the market, at which time the parish council had the pub designated as an Asset of Community Value, which meant that it could not be sold for six months to allow time for the community to make a bid. The local villagers argued that the property was a pub and should be run and sold as a pub, and that any attempt to get change of use would fail.

By 2019 the pub was mainly acting as a B&B with the bar opening only when there were guests. It closed in June 2019.

Re-opened in 2020 under new management.
