Crompton's Mule, Bolton

Cromptons Mule opened in April 1979 and originally sold Boddingtons Bitter. To celebrate the leap year in 1980 a meal was held here on February 29th. In July 1980 Les Kilsby, the Branch Chairman was moving out of the area so a 'kick off' was arranged here, it was selling Theakston Bitter now. It was listed in the 1980 selective Greater Manchester Beer Guide. On January 17th 1981 a social and meal was held here followed by a crawl round the town centre. In February 1981 Draught Bass had replaced the Theaksons Bitter. The venue was visited on a regular basis for socials and meals later in 1981, May 21st, September 24th and December 16th. In April 1982 it was listed in an article about Bolton town centre pubs, there was a social here on October 29th 1982 where it was found that the Draught Bass had gone but bottle conditioned White Shield was available. By October 1983 a Full Licence had been obtained and cask beer was to be reintroduced. The pub reopened in August 1984 as Hawthorns Piano Bar and was selling Bass Cask Bitter, however a month later the cellar had been deemed unsuitable for this Beer! It was Keg only after that. on 25/06/82 Draught Bass was 60p a pint.
