Historic Interest
Last recorded Licensing Change 31/10/09, Landlord and then owner Frank Smith. The pub was listed in John Stotts 1977 Guide to Good Beer in Bolton selling Greenall Whitley Bitter and both light and dark Mild ( E), with Juke Box, dominoes, pool and snacks. In May 1981 it was selling Greenall Whitley Mild and Bitter (E) and had Bulmers Cider available (H), In November 1983 handpumps replaced the electric ones. A Branch Meeting was held here on December 7th 1983. In January 1985 Greenall Original Bitter was available but did not last long. The pub was listed in the selective Greater Manchester Guides for 1980 and 1985. A social was held here on September 5th 1985 and a Branch Meeting on October 1st 1986. It was also visited on the Xmas Crawl on December 11th 1986. Davenports Bitter was on the bar at the Branch meeting on February 9th 1988. In the programme for the 1992 Great North Western Beer Festival it was listed as being called Magees and selling Greenall Whitley Mild and Bitter. (H) and the address was 339 not 231? In Autumn 1994 the pub was reported as closed and by June 1995 the sale had fallen through. It was noted as still closed in January 1996, but by June had been delicenced but had been bought by new owners who applied for it to be relicenced in July 1996. By January 1997 it reopened and was now called Gallaghers Oyster Bar and the beers were Tetley Mild and Bitter, Marstons Pedigree and the guest was Wadworth 6X. By July 2000 it had been renamed the Oystercatcher Brasserie and was selling Tetley Bitter, Boddingtons Bitter, Marstons Pedigree and Robinsons Best Bitter. There was a period when it was a restaurant called Conquistador Tapas and later Moghul Palace, but in 2009 it was bought and became a pub again called Smudges.
