In 1990 the Princess Court Retirement Apartments were built on the site of the former Colwyn Bay Hotel which was demolished in 1975 having housed the headquarters of the Ministry of Food during the 2nd. world war and until 1953.
The Colwyn Bay Hotel, built in 1873 and designed by John Douglas (1830-1911) with 92 bedrooms and 365 windows. During the war years there was no central heating and the offices were warmed by open fires which had been previously used to warm the hotel bedrooms.
Planning 10726** approved with conditions 04-06-1987 "SHELTERED HOUSING COMPRISING 126 FLATS, AND WARDEN'S AND GUESTS ACCOMODATION, AND FORMULATION OF CAR PARK."
