This Pub is Permanently Closed
The Clock House was built in the 1960s and closed in March 2005. An article in the 5 April 2005 issue of the News Shopper reports on the circumstances which led to the pub’s closure.
The first picture shows the pub in 1986, and has been taken, with permission, from the Dover Kent Archives web entry relating to the pub, having been sent by Ian Muir of the Beckenham History Society.
An earlier picture of the Clock House can be seen in the pub’s Closed Pubs website entry; the pub sign that can be seen in that picture depicts a mansion of that name that had once existed nearby.
Both of those web sites refer to an earlier pub, the Prince Arthur, that had been sited on the same road junction as the Clock House, the junction of Beckenham Road and Churchfields Road (formerly Arthur Road). The Prince Arthur was destroyed by a flying bomb in August 1944.
The second picture here (taken in September 2015) shows the flats which were built on the site of the Prince Arthur. The third picture (taken in June 2021) is a different view of the same road junction. The multi-storey building which can be seen on the right is believed to be the same as the one that can be seen to the right of the first picture.
The fourth picture is a view of the junction taken from the Beckenham Road station footbridge.
