Historic Interest
In 1919, the Samuel Osborn and Company asked famed Victorian architect William John Hale (1862-1929) to design a new railway spring shop at the Rutland Works. This is the only known industrial building designed by Hale, who was responsible for several iconic buildings across the city. These include Stephen Hill Wesleyan Chapel, Bole Hill School (both 1896), Hammerton Street School (1904) and Banner Cross Methodist Church (1929). Internally, a utilitarian workshop, the extravagant Insignia Works has large segmental headed windows, subtle architectural detailing, and relief panels which advertise the name and trademarks of the firm.
