This Pub is Closed Long Term

Note: This pub closed due to severe fire damage in December 2021, and remains closed summer 2022. The highest pub in Cornwall, at 303m above sea level, this free house was during the 19th century the paymaster-general's house for the local mines. Named after a local rock formation, it is an ideal base for walking Bodmin Moor and close to ancient monuments such as The Hurlers (a stone circle), and the workings of old tin mines. A homely hostelry, isolated but welcoming, it has two bar areas, one side mainly for diners, and has painted ceilings, wooden furniture and carpeted floors. The pub supports darts, skittles, euchre and cricket teams, and live music is performed on Sat evenings; there is also a monthly quiz. The one or two guest ales may vary but are usually selected from Otter Ale, Taylor Landlord or St Austell HSD. The food is traditional ‘pub grub’ rather than 'gastro'.
