This Pub is Permanently Closed
The Bull Shades (the building on the left) was closely associated with the Royal Victoria & Bull Hotel (Bull 'n' Vic). It stood behind the latter and operated as a separate pub. In its later years it opened only on market days (cattle market on Wednesdays and general market on Thursdays). Market traders and their customers could obtain their drinks either inside the bar or through a specially provided hatch.
The Bull Shades traded from 1869 to 1973, when the pub was demolished to make way for the Arndale shopping centre. Not all of us would see that as progress...
