Historic Interest
The Cathouse Inn was situated on Parkside Lane, directly behind where this pub is now. This old pub was demolished in 1899 and rebuilt, opening c.1901 but shut 1930 when the Garstang by-pass was built nearby and the new ‘XL’ was built. The building survived till 1989. The ‘XL’ was built by the Blackpool firm of Catterall & Swarbrick and named after their flagship ale. It got in the Guinness Book of Records for the shortest pub name. By a series of takeovers it fell into the hands of Bass who renamed it the Chequered Flag, subsequently shortened to the Flag. Closed 2008, reopened 2011 under its present name.
