Old High Street coaching inn dating from the eighteenth century that has been pleasantly refurbished. The interior is mainly open plan which has been sympathetically divided into more intimate snug sections with a real fire. Good pub food is served. A large courtyard area is found through the old arched entrance with an enclosed garden at the rear. Famed for links with Lord of the Rings author J.R.R. Tolkien, it has a map of Middle-earth adorning the walls. Local and national ales are available. Branch Pub of the Year 2023.
