This Pub is Permanently Closed
The Anchor and Crown was a town centre pub that traded from 1681 to 1958, having been rebuilt in 1885. It was known locally as the Iron Gate, as it was next door to a gated alleyway. There was a large concert room at the back.
In its latter days a Truman's tied house, it was demolished soon after closure, along with several neighbouring buildings, to make way for a new Woolworth's store. Woolworth's did not last quite as long as the pub, closing in 2008. The building is now (2018) occupied by something called "Poundworld Plus".
