Mills Brewing Tap Room, Stroud

Mills Brewing occupies part of the historic Griffin Mill complex at Thrupp, one of the area's long-established industrial sites. Griffin Mill was first recorded in 1599 and dates from around 1600, when it formed part of the Stroud area's important woollen and cloth-making industry.

The mill subsequently adapted to other industries, including furniture and cabinet making. From 1912 part of Griffin Mill was occupied by Tyler's Ltd, cabinet makers, who remained there until 1956. During the Second World War the works were involved in aircraft production, with local craftsmen producing wooden aircraft components and glider parts, including Horsa wings.

The Griffin Mill buildings are not individually listed, but the complex lies within the Brimscombe and Thrupp Industrial Heritage Conservation Area. Stroud District Council identifies the Griffin Mill ranges as an important group of historic industrial buildings and notes their contribution to the area's industrial character. The surviving brick mill buildings, large windows and cast-iron glazing are characteristic features of the historic complex.
