Named after one of the first Steam Engines to work on the Carlisle to Newcastle Railway. Owned by a Community Trust, the Gilsland Community Benefit Trust Ltd and shareholders and recently reopened after a share issue and government funding (Community Ownership Fund). Leased and managed professionally. This traditional pub close to the Cumbria / Northumberland border offers a high quality local ale , food and accommodation to locals, tourists and walkers on Hadrian's Wall (50 meters from the HW Trail). A large bar & separate dinning room are decorated with railway posters & boast 2 log burning stoves. Dog friendly in bar. There is a small outdoor seating area and free WiFi. 4 ensuite bedrooms (two double, two twin), no dogs.

The pub closed in October 2022. The Gilsland Community Benefit Society Limited (GCBSL) agreed a purchase price of £295,000 with the owners of the pub. A community share scheme was launched in December 2023 with £1 a share, with a minimum pledge of 25 shares. They raised more than £150,000 from 466 shareholders. They made a bid for a Community Ownership Fund grant and received £215,000, and they completed the purchase of the pub. A tenant, George Campbell, was appointed to run it, with the pub reopening in October 2024.
