Large food-oriented pub with beam and brick interior. Comfortably furnished bar stocking four or five local and regional brewery ales, restaurant and modern rooms, plus extensive gardens.

Historic Interest

The pub is named after James Woodforde, who was parson at what was then just named Weston, from 1776 until his death on New Year’s Day 1803. He became internationally famous when his diaries first started to be published in 1924. They give a marvellous view of a late eighteenth century rural parson’s life, including his problems with servants, family, parishioners, the occasional smuggler, and his bishop! He travelled occasionally to Somerset via London to see family members and often took in tourist sites including the menagerie at the Tower of London. His diaries include vignettes of the problems of travel still familiar to us today and, not least, listings of the vast amount of food and alcohol consumed by him and his household. There is an active Parson Woodforde Society and members may download the complete set of diaries.
