PLEASE NOTE: Opening hours vary according to the season, the number of customers and whether the ferry is able to run (dependent on weather and tides). Check their Facebook or website for updates. They are normally open from Easter to mid-October. The opening hours shown are the normal ferry times.

This 300 year old pub on Piel Island can be reached by passenger ferry from the lifeboat station at Roa Island (see website for prices and times) or by foot from Walney at low tide (be very careful!). Please note that the last ferry back to the mainland may be earlier than the quoted closing time.

Food is available during ferry times.

The landlord of the Ship Inn has for many years been referred to as the King of Piel. Aaron Sanderson, the current King, was crowned on 3 September 2022. The castle dominates the island which was once part of the Furness Abbey estate. English Heritage do not charge for entry to the castle.

Historic Interest

Piel Island was given over to the town of Barrow-in-Furness in 1920 by the Duke of Buccleugh as a memorial to those who lost their lives during the First World War.

The Castle is under the stewardship of English Heritage.

The ferry crossing in a small 12 seated boat can pose problems stepping on and off especially if there is a high tide. Cobbles, crazy paving and uneven grass once up the stairs from the jetty.
