  • Historic Interior

A great little gem, this Grade ll listed pub dates from the 1600s and is located on the right hand side of cobbled Church Street as you head towards the Abbey, just near the old market square where public whippings of thieves and beggars once took place.

Regular GBG entry.

The front bar tends to get crowded, so you can go down the alley beside the pub and into the back bar.

Offering up to five ever changing cask ales from the Punch list, as well as a craft-keg offering. Belgian beers, both bottled and on draught, are served.

An ever increasing range of Yapas is available, together with several different varieties of olives, a selection of Yorkshire cheeses and a range of seafood nibbles.

Received a sympathetic refurbishment in 2024.

Two star - A pub interior of very special national historic interest

Listed status: II

Intimate little pub of real character, right in the heart of Whitby’s harbour-side old town.

Its old shop-style front bar has a back-fitting, dado panelling, counter-front and bench seating which could all date back to the pub’s late Victorian rebuilding. A hatch to the old staircase-hall behind was probably for off-sales. The back ‘Vaults’, its servery, and even the striking leaded ‘Black Horse Vaults’ window, however, derive from an extensive 1986 refit by the Leeds brewers Tetley’s – modern creations, but consciously respectful of the pub’s historic importance. The Black Horse was, in fact, badged by Tetley's as one of their select group of 'Heritage Inns'.
