87 Church Street, Whitby, YO22 4BH (View on Google Map)

Historic Grade II listed pub on Church Street, built by Sir Hugh Cholmley in 1681, serving two real ales and where bookings are recommended for the restaurant.

Arguably the most fascinating building in Whitby. If there is ever a pub with a 'story to tell' then this is the one. And to be quite honest, it is a privilege for us that this remarkable survivor, and its sympathetically restored interior, is still around for us to marvel at.

Evidenced from its exterior, it could have been one of the first coaching inns in the area.

Legend also has it that it was used as a recruitment place for Captain Cook.

Fell into disuse at the start of the Second World War.

During the 1980s it was used to store lobster pots.

Acquired in the late 1980s by a local builder, Mr Perkins, an 11 year period of restoration took place. It features a magnificent Bass & co mirror in the hallway.
